From the Fire Chief ………

 We are facing some of the coldest months of this year, now is also the time to remember how to properly use portable space heaters. These devices are responsible for a majority of the residential fires during the months due to malfunctions and misuse. The Fire Department does not recommend the use of any type portable space heater. If a space heater is used, we offer the following precautions:

·       All portable space heaters must be equipped with automatic shut off safety features;

·       All portable heating equipment must be listed by Underwriter’s Laboratory or Factory Mutual; Place space heater a minimum of three feet from furniture, walls, curtains and other materials

·       Never leave space heaters unattended. Ensure these units are turned OFF if you leave home or go to bed.

·       Never add fuel to a hot heater, refuel outdoors and never substitute another grade fuel.

               **Note: liquid fuel space heaters are prohibited for use in commercial or public buildings. **

·       While using a fireplace, ensure that the chimney is clean and that the damper is in operational condition and open prior to use. The fireplace must also be separated from the living space by a metal screen or heat tempered glass, which will catch sparks and embers.

·       Lastly, your family should have a plan for at least two escape routes from your home in the event of a fire. You should practice these routes and have all family members agree on a meeting place outside of your home, after the escape.

In our continued service to serve our citizens, the fire department offers Blood Pressure screening and in home fire safety inspections. We are here to help you have a safe 2012! As always, please feel free to contact our department at 491-7637.
